Verification of Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Projects and Enhancement of Carbon Dioxide Removals
ISO 14064-2:2019
What is ISO 14064-2?
ISO 14064-2 is a standard that addresses the quantification, monitoring, and validation of projects aimed at:
- the verified reduction of greenhouse gas emissions,
- the avoidance of emissions, and
- the removal of carbon dioxide.
It is applied to projects that include:
- renewable energy sources,
- energy efficiency,
- fuel switching,
- waste management,
- sustainable agricultural practices, and
- many other types of initiatives.
What does validation/verification under ISO 14064-2 include?
During the initial validation of the project, the following are assessed:
- Project documentation for emission reduction,
- The selected baseline and reference period,
- Correctness and application of the selected methodology,
- Calculation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, emission reductions, and carbon removals,
- Additionality,
- Monitoring procedures and available data,
- Transparency and completeness of the project.
During periodic verification, the following are assessed:
- Proper implementation of the project,
- Emission and removal calculations,
- Emission factors,
- Accuracy of data, and
- Availability of appropriate documentation.
Who is it intended for?
ISO 14064-2 is intended for any organization, company, or group, regardless of legal form, that wishes to implement a multi-year project for emission reductions and enhancement of removals, either with the ultimate objective of reducing the overall carbon footprint of a production or service supply chain, or for the generation of carbon credits.
What are the benefits of validation/verification?
- Proof of emission reductions,
- Documentation of environmental benefits,
- Utilization of carbon credits,
- Enhanced transparency,
- Added value to the project,
- Compliance with end-user requirements.
Validation/Verification Process:
- Application for project validation and signing of an agreement,
- Review of the project study,
- Assessment of the project’s correctness,
- Issuance of a Validation Statement,
- Periodic verification of results,
- Periodic issuance of a Verification Statement.
